About the Book

Book 1 of My Family/Mi Familia, a four-book series of easy-read bilingual books. Meet Isabel, Tina, Danny and their family and pets. "We're rich, aren't we, Dad?" asks Tina. Yes, the Rosas family is rich in love and laughter. Enjoy the rhythms of a family that knows that wealth isn't measured in money.

Highlighted Reviews

"It is clear that the members of the family appreciate all that they have; and while there is a lesson here, it is not overwhelming. The minimal text is straightforward, and the pleasing … colorful watercolors add to the sweetness of the story. A well-executed … appealing story that is recommended for all libraries with Spanish collections."— Críticas

"The details of the watercolor pictures are nicely linked to the text … Kids who know either English or Spanish can be introduced to this book and encouraged to try to learn some words or sentences in the unfamiliar language. This is the first in a new bilingual series for young children created by a major proponent of family literacy initiatives."— Kirkus Reviews

Pat provides some background on the My Family/Mi Familia series and talks about the difficulty of selling bilingual books. Video provided by WETV's ¡Colorín Colorado!:

Sandra Lamm, Early Childhood Coordinator with the Library Department in Fort Worth, Texas, shared a project created by a family at one of the city's Early Childhod Resource Centers. Sandra wrote "Erica Rodrigues said that Let’s Eat! ¡A Comer! is the favorite book of her daughters, Julianna and Brianna, ages 2 and 3. Mrs. Rodrigues said they read the book over and over, and she said, 'What I like about this book is that to be happy you only need simple things.' So for their project they covered a piece of Styrofoam with construction paper to make a table, and then replicated the food that the family shared in the book with items they found around the house."
