Arbuthnot Lecture: Bookjoy! Alegria en los Libros!

Pat Mora

I have so been looking forward to delivering the May Hill Arbuthnot Lecture this evening in Santa Barbara. I feel very honored and am deeply grateful to the Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC) and to the committee. I’ll be discussing one of my favorite topics: reading.

Día celebrations far and wide, large and small

Pat Mora

7th annual Diapalooza 2016We’re excited to share these upcoming Día celebrations! Some are large and long-running, others are smaller and only a few years old: all are welcome. Your participation doesn’t have to be large or complicated. Why not start with a simple Día story time and watch it grow?

Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
The 2002 winner of the Mora Award is offering a simple celebration featuring books, music, crafts and special activities on three April Saturdays.
Dia in Orange City, IA
Orange City Public Library, Orange City, IA
The Orange City Public Library will host its second annual Día celebration on Saturday, April 30, featuring a bilingual story time and “culture stations” throughout the library where children can get stamps for their Día passports. Each station will also feature a trickster tale, an activity or craft and stories and snacks that are representative of the individual cultures.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Charlotte, NC
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, a 2008 winner of the Mora Award, is recognizing Día’s 20th anniversary with 20 different cultural programs throughout the month of April, taking place in library branches and community agencies. The finale will be a grand celebration at ImaginOn on April 30.
Dia at Charlottle Mecklenburg

Seattle Public Library, Seattle, WA
Throughout the month the library will celebrate with Día story times and crafts for children and families. A culminating celebration features poet Claudia Castro Luna reading children’s poems in English and Spanish. Children will be invited to create their own poetic compositions using rhyme, word collages and their imaginations. There will also be refreshments and free books for kids.

Memphis Public Library, Memphis, TN
On April 30, the Caza Theatro Bilingual Theater Company will perform at the Cordova Library, and children will receive a free book.
