Día Grant Winners from CSMCL

8th annual diapaloozaDía partner Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature (CSMCL) is pleased to announce the two winners of their 2017 Día Grant with an African American Focus. The 2017 winners are Alturas International Academy Library in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Quinby Street Resource Center Library in Sharon, Pennsylvania.

Alturas International Academy Library’s Día event theme is: “Beauty in the World: Celebrating Día.” Students will spend three weeks researching notable figures, primarily African Americans, whose contributions have made this world a more beautiful place and who inspire them in some way. The culminating Día event will be held April 14, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.

Quinby Street Resource Center Library’s Día event theme is: “Passing the Baton: The Influence of Frederick and Patricia McKissack’s Children’s Books…a Día Program.” The event will be held on April 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.

After their programs have been held, each winner will receive the grant reward of $500 in selected multicultural children’s books from CSMCL.

Día at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library

8th annual diapaloozaIt’s National Library Week, a perfect time to say “cheers” to Día Dynamo Meryle Leonard, Outreach Manager at the Mora Award-winning Public Library of Charlotte/Mecklenburg County, who sent us a note about their upcoming Día celebration!

April Means Día at ALSC!

8th annual diapaloozaThe Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) provides many Día resources on their website and Facebook page, including:

  • Building STEAM with Día booklists
  • Coloring and activity sheets to download
  • White Paper: The Importance of Diversity in Library Programs and Material Collections for Children
  • Día Publicity Tool Kit

Don’t forget to add your Día programs to the ALSC Program Registry!

Día at Multnomah County Library

8th annual diapaloozaThank you to Día Dynamo Ana Ruiz Morillo for sending us this information about the upcoming Children’s Day, Book Day celebration at the Multnomah County Library!

Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros
An event for the whole family to celebrate children and bilingual literacy. Families will enjoy music, stories, books, fun STEM activities, and educational crafts. Each child in attendance will receive a free book. Books include multiple titles from the 2017 ALSC Notable Children’s books including The Princess and the Warrior by Duncan Tonatiuh, and many titles from the ALA booklist 2017 Building STEAM with Dia. There will also be other cultural books like Frida by Yuyi Morales, and Magdalena’s Picnic by Patricia Aguilar Morrissey, who will be reading from her book during the April 29th Dia celebration. Our celebration is made possible in part by The Library Foundation with support from US Bank Foundation and BNSF Railway Foundation.

Support your schools and libraries and all who serve children to plan their annual Children’s Day, Book Day celebration on or near April 30th. Families are our essential partners. Remember: we celebrate our young and connect them with fun and memorable literacy activities.
