Día in the Lone Star state

Pat Mora

7th annual Diapalooza 2016Texas librarians have been leading and sharing Día celebrations for 20 years! Here are a few of this year’s events.

Brownsville School District
Administration, teachers and parents from thirty-seven elementary schools have collaborated to present Brownsville’s third Día celebration, focusing on Early Childhood. Activities include music, poetry, videos, school presentation and technology and culminate with a book giveaway on April 30. Author Rene Saldana, Jr. and illustrator Carolyn D. Flores will be visiting some of the schools to share their book Dale, Dale, Dale. Watch a video about Brownsville’s 2015 celebration.

Fort Worth Library
Books, crafts and other activities will emphasize the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curriculum specifically wildlife and extinct species. Participants will recognize cultural differences; use scientific investigation and reasoning; and learn that living organisms interact with others present in the ecosystem on a daily basis for survival.

El Paso Public Library
El Paso has consistently held an impressive Día celebration, routinely drawing 20–30,000 attendees and giving away up to 30,000 books to children who might not otherwise have a book of their own. The El Paso Public Library and the Parks and Recreation Department have worked together to organize the celebration for the past 18 years. This year’s celebration will be held on April 30 in Washington Park from 10 am – 4 pm.

A huge thank you to Día’s friends at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, who have created the wonderful Lone Star Día resource page to help planners.

Gracias to some special Día partners

Pat Mora

7th annual Diapalooza 2016Pat Mora was inspired to create Día by the Mexican tradition of celebrating April 30th as El día del niño. Even though Día has now expanded to be a year-long commitment to linking ALL children and families to books, we’d like to thank some of our Día partners who have a special mission to reach Latinos.

REFORMA
REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, was Día’s first organizational partner. Hard-working REFORMA Presidents, committee chairs and members served as judges for the The Estela and Raúl Mora Award for fifteen years.

¡Colorín Colorado!
A bilingual site for educators and families of English language learners, ¡Colorín Colorado! has a wonderful Día page with information about planning a celebration; resources for parents; and classroom activities and other ideas for teachers. There’s also a great article by Irania Patterson and Jamie Campbell Naidoo, The Spirit of Día: Celebrating Cuentos Every Day.

School libraries transform learning!

Pat Mora

7th annual Diapalooza 2016That’s the theme of this year’s School Library Month. Every April school librarians are encouraged to host activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in transforming learning.

School librarians are important Día advocates! Share this colorful poster of twenty-six nouns that matter to ALL of us who work to connect all children to books, languages and cultures.
