A year ago today, THE BEAUTIFUL LADY: OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE was published in English and Spanish. How I love the illustrations by Steve Johnson & Lou Fancher that depict the grand Mexican landscape and the quiet faith of Juan Diego, and how grateful I am to Knopf for publishing this legend. I hope that when you share this book, you’ll enjoy a conversation about the wonderful tradition of family story-telling. Grandma Lupita illustrates the pleasure she finds in the annual re-telling of a legend she loves. I grew up hearing this story and grew up with a dear aunt we called Lobo. She was our wolf-mother, and I can still hear her voice telling us stories in Spanish and English. My daughter Libby Martinez and I celebrate Lobo in our upcoming book I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE due out in April.

Whether the story-teller in your family is a grandparent, parent, aunt or uncle, during this holiday season, sit back and listen. I grew up with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in my home, school, and church. Her image comforts me. She reminds me that this complex universe can be a caring place. During this holiday season and the end of 2013, be part of the tradition of sharing stories with family and friends. Let’s follow Grandma Lupita’s example of sharing our beliefs and nurturing our young.
