Our Lady of Guadalupe
In a basket, he puts slips of paper on which he has written the names of those he wants to pray for or for his current intentions. During his daily time for reflection, he can hold the basket rather than focusing on a memory exercise.
A basket for Our Lady of Guadalupe seems a wonderful practice. You may prefer another spiritual power to whom you wish to entrust your prayers and hopes. Life is both joyful and hard. It’s comforting to entrust our concerns to powers greater than ours.
This weekend is Mother’s Day, a holiday honoring motherhood in all its forms. Why not mark the day with a poem from Love to Mamá: A Tribute to Mothers?
“In a beautiful tribute to mothers, grandmothers and care-giving women, 13 poets write with joy, humor, and love about the maternal bond. … Without exception, the poems are in their differing forms and voices of superb literary quality, making their effective use of rhythm and meter. While cultural heritage provides a fundamental context, the universality of emotions expressed makes this a book with broad applicability and appeal … Wonderful for reading aloud or for enjoying quietly alone. This is that rare book that will resonate across age ranges and cultures to appeal to the common human experience. A tour de force.”—Starred, School Library Journal
Pat wrote about witnessing the special connection Spanish-speaking children make with books that include their culture and language. Her piece was posted on both the Lee & Low Books blog and the First Book blog.

¡Gracias! ¡Gracias!
I end our 4th Annual Díapalooza with the same theme I used on April 1: Mille grazie. Obrigado. Danke. Kitos. Merci. Thanks! Thousands of children and families across the country have enjoyed Día celebrations this month thanks to the efforts of Día organizers, Día leaders such as the Dynamos and Author & Illustrator Advocates, and thanks to many of you.
April 2014, we’ll celebrate Día’s 18th anniversary. In the coming year, become a daily Día Ambassador. Join us in making Día a daily commitment to link all children to books, languages and cultures. Be an enthusiastic advocate for children and literacy. Excite your family, friends and colleagues about valuing all children and insuring that the children in their lives daily enjoy books—diverse books ;)
