November 2, El día de los muertos

Pat Mora

blog-squashandceramicmusicians
El día de los muertos, The Day of the Dead, also known as All Souls Day, is a time for remembering and honoring loved ones. This is not another Halloween. Many cultures have traditions for honoring their deceased family and friends. As I mentioned recently at a reading at Davidson College (NC), although I too enjoy the Mexican humor about skeletons and enjoy annually bringing out my ceramic musicians, I can get frustrated at the level of commercialization (skeletons, skulls, liquor) that ignores what can be a special time.

I wrote about some of my family memories connected with this observance in “Remembering Lobo,” (Nepantla: Essays from the Land in the Middle), in the poem “Ofrenda for Lobo,” (Agua Santa: Holy Water), and in the November chapter of House of Houses. A few years ago, I read the children’s books I could find on this theme and decided to write one myself.

Today, let’s remember the special family members and friends who have enriched our lives.

(Read a previous blog post about a museum exhibit for El día de los muertos which included an altar created for Pat’s parents.)

Coca-Cola Company and HSF “Share Possibilities/Comparte Possibilidades”

Coke _Hispanic Scholarship Fund Program
All three of my children received help in their under-grad years from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Each remembers how much receiving those HSF funds helped pay bills. Let’s promote this important opportunity! Let’s alert parents with high school students about this initiative.

From the press release:

The Share Possibilities program grants a total of $200,000 in scholarships to college-bound Hispanic students. Nationally, the grand prize winner will receive $20,000; four students will be awarded $10,000 and sixteen will receive $2,500. The remaining $100,000 will be awarded by the company’s retail partners, within their respective communities, across the nation.

From Sept. 1 through Dec. 15, eligible high school seniors may apply for the opportunity to win a scholarship at www.Coke-HSF.com.

Thanking Our Educators

Pat Mora
Autumn in Northern New Mexico

Autumn in Northern New Mexico.

Autumn is my favorite season in New Mexico. Under an unbelievable blue sky, the world turns golden with aspens, cottonwoods, and chamisas. I was mighty taken with the bright red in this photo though. The ristras, red chiles strung for drying–and now often for decoration, juxtaposed with the American flag said so much visually and culturally. The scene, of course, made me think of the upcoming book, I Pledge Allegiance, that will be out in April written with my older daughter, Libby Martinez.

The academic year is well on its way, but autumn reminds me of how grateful I feel to educators at all levels in formal academic settings and informal settings such as museums. Seldom valued enough, our educators invest in our next generation. Gracias.
